**1. Find the dataset**

Browse the [catalogue](https://platform.valyu.ai/data-sources), or use the [Datasources API](/guides/datasources) to discover source IDs and metadata programmatically.

**2. Check access and supported APIs**

Inspect the source's `access_modes` (which APIs can use it) and the plan it needs. While you have free credits, every standard-plan source is available. Some sources are available only through DeepResearch; licensed content may have separate access requirements.

**3. Search or start a research task**

Use exact dataset IDs in [source filters](/search/filtering/sources), or describe the evidence you need in a [DeepResearch brief](/guides/deepresearch-quickstart).

## Understand coverage

Availability, freshness and full-text coverage vary by source. Public records, licensed publications and web results have different access and use conditions. The catalogue is the place to check current details; [data coverage and access](/concepts/data-coverage) explains how to interpret them.
